Charity Commission Number: 516363

The Society, which was formed in 1968, takes an active part in promoting interest in all aspects of local history concerning Cleveland and Teesside.

Our members carry out research into the historical, industrial, architectural, archaeological and sociological evolution of the area and its adjoining regions, and then disseminate that research through talks, written articles and other means.

We have regular talks by invited speakers on topics of interest, as well as occasional themed day schools.

We also take part in visits and tours of places of interest.

We encourage the preservation and use of historical documents, and the preservation of buildings and other material objects of historical importance.

We promote and support local history projects and work closely with local archives, libraries, museums and groups connected with archaeology, family history and industrial archaeology.

Publications

In pursuit of our objectives, we publish a number of documents:

  • Our Bulletin, ‘Cleveland History’, is issued free to members twice a year. It is noted for its high standard and its variety of topics – there is always something to interest everyone.
  • A Newsletter is distributed to Members on a regular basis: this contains short articles based on the research interests of Members, news and views, book reviews and details of forthcoming activities.
  • We also publish occasional books on aspects of the history of the area.

Communications and Information

In addition to publicising our activities through the Newsletter, we also maintain a web-site and a Facebook page, and also issue, to those who request it, a regular e-mail bulletin called ‘The Scroll’, which includes a regular diary of events (not just those offered by the Society) taking place that may be of interest to Members of the society.
