Known for: Edmund Harvey was a pewterer in Stockton-on-Tees. In 1769 he pioneered the idea of cutting out the great loop in River Tees downstream from Stockton. He made two copper plates, which he engraved to show the advantage of a cut in the River Tees, shortening the journey for ships leaving Stockton for the Tees Mouth. His plan was repeatedly cited until the Mandale Cut in the River Tees became a reality half a century later. Harvey is also known for establishing a Sunday School in Stockton for six boys and six girls. He was running his school before Robert Raikes began his famous Sunday School at Gloucester. Harvey’s school could be called a ragged school since he raised funds to clothe the children.
